Turtle toys and collectibles appeal to children and adults alike, often inspired by the symbolism of wisdom, patience, and longevity that turtles represent across cultures. Decorative turtle figurines and jewelry pieces, such as handcrafted leatherback sea turtle (tinglar) designs, serve as both playthings and meaningful keepsakes that teach cultural values and heritage. Puerto Rican turtle-themed toys and art pieces often feature the iconic leatherback sea turtle, a native species to the island, making them popular educational and collectible items that celebrate Caribbean wildlife and indigenous traditions.
Persistence and Patience
In a lifetime, turtles migrate thousands of miles. Over several months, turtles can travel up to 12,000 miles! This is one of the reasons why turtles are known for persistence and patience. The route might be long and difficult, but turtles strength of character makes them endure and continue their journey. This can be a powerful mindset to have in life, where goals and changes might seem far away from attaining, but with persistence and patience we can achieve them.
Longevity and Wisdom
Turtles represent wisdom, patience, longevity, and persistence across many cultures and spiritual traditions. These qualities stem from turtles’ ability to migrate thousands of miles over their lifetimes and live up to 150 years, symbolizing inner peace, emotional maturity, and the strength to endure challenges. In Puerto Rican culture, the leatherback sea turtle (tinglar) holds special significance as a native species and cultural icon, representing resilience, connection to nature, and the importance of protecting island heritage and wildlife.

As a family-owned, designer jewelry store in Puerto Rico, the final reason we chose the Leatherback Turtle for one of our collections is because of its significance in the island. Known as “el tinglar” in Spanish, Puerto Rico holds an annual festival for the leatherback in the region of Luquillo. This municipality is located on the north-eastern side of the island, where there is a reservoir and conservation areas for the leatherback. All funds of the festival go to agencies and non-profits dedicated to their protection.
If you’re drawn to items with meaning, turtle jewelry is a great way to think about the ways you’d like to practice and emulate turtles’ virtues. These turtle jewelry pieces are also crafted from high-quality materials, meaning you can cherish them in longevity.
