14K gold differs from other types of gold in its purity levels. While 24 karat (24K) gold is pure gold, 14K gold has 14 parts gold to 10 parts other metals. When used in jewelry, this difference affects its durability, appearance, affordability and versatility.
Durability
The alloys in 14K gold, which regularly include copper and silver, make it harder and more durable than higher-purity gold. These alloys are more scratch- and damage-resistant, making each piece more suitable for everyday wear.
Appearance
14K gold has a high enough purity to retain the warm, visually appealing tone of real gold. Lower-purity gold may lose this color to increasingly reflect the appearance of the other metals present in the alloy.
While higher-purity gold more accurately reflects the true color of gold, the other potential disadvantages it creates can make it the less preferred choice of jewelers and buyers alike. Additionally, some people may find that jewelry in the color of pure gold is harder to match to a wider range of styles.

Affordability
Since 14K gold is mixed with less expensive metals, it’s more affordable than higher-purity gold. The increased durability of 14K gold also means that you can likely wear it more regularly than you would higher-purity gold, adding value for the buyer.
Versatility
Because of its enhanced durability and softer color tones, 14K gold works with a wider range of jewelry than higher-purity gold can.
14K gold is often used in:
- Rings: A classic appearance, rings made from 14K gold can be crafted with either a matte or polished finish, so you can choose the style that most appeals to you.
- Earrings: Whether paired with silver, diamonds or another metal or jewel, earrings made from 14K gold can take many different styles.
- Bracelets: Perfect to match with gold charms and rings, bracelets made from 14K gold can also be worn with a low risk of getting scratched or marked by other bracelets.
- Charms: Since it’s durable yet easy to shape, 14K gold jewelry charms resist marking and scratching from the jewelry piece they’re attached to.
- Chains: Elegant and timeless, chains made from 14K gold can complement many looks and styles.
